CAPS Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Support Group
The UVA Center for Counseling and Psychological Services
offers a group which helps sudents to deal with a wide
variety of concerns related to being gay, lesbian, or
bisexual. This is not a therapy group because we do not
regard homosexuality or bisexuality per se as
psychopathological. Rather, the group focuses on issues of
self-development, self-esteem, and enhanced social and
psycho-sexual adjustment. The group meets weekly and
offers members the opportunity to share experiences
and provide mutual support. It allows them to work
through a variety of developmental and interpersonal
issues (e.g. decisions related to coming out, developing and
managing relationships, talking with parents, assessing
personal growth). Participants not only discover ways in
which they can improve the quality of their own lives as
gay, lesbian, and bisexual individuals, but they also learn
ways in which they can have a positive impact on the
communities in which they live.
Those interested in the group go through an initial
confidential individual assessment in order to insure the
group's appropiateness for them. All who join the group
promise to follow guidelines related to group process and
confidentiality.
The group meets on Thursdays from 3:30-5:00PM at
the Center for Counseling and Psychological Services. For
more information call 243-5150. Ask for William Anderson or
Greg Henriques.
