HISTORY

The founding of the Association marked an important advance for sexual minorities at the University of Virginia. Though a comparable student organization has existed since 1972, the faculty and staff worked independently toward the adoption of a policy barring discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation by the University in 1991. Since then, in addition to the formation of the Association, a number of academic courses have been offered in the history, literature, and psychology of sexual minorities in the United States and other countries. The Association continues to encourage and improve the University's life and work, so as to create an environment supportive of all minorities.

Representatives of the Association meet with the University administration to discuss the concerns of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transexual faculty and staff and the role of LGBTFSGSA within the University as a voice of change. LGBTFSGSA is also consulted on issues which directly affect our interests.

Founding Co-conveners:
Bernard Mayes, Assistant Dean, College of Arts and Sciences
Charlotte Patterson, Associate Professor, Psychology Department
