What: Virginians Stand Up for Equality - Charlottesville Rally is part of a statewide GLBT movement to protest implementation of the "Marriage Affirmation Act".

Why: The Marriage Affirmation Act is one of the most anti-gay discriminatory pieces of legislation in the country, prohibiting civil unions and apparently voiding private contracts between gay and lesbian people, such as wills, medical directives and custody decision.

While this law is going into effect on July 1, the coalition Virginians Stand Up for Equality is using this event as a kick-off activity for continued and persistent statewide grassroots organizing to overturn or repeal this law.

Over 75 groups have so far sponsored and endorsed this action statewide, many of these groups will be present at the rally.
