WordPress MU 2.8.1 is available. I plan to do the update over the weekend. Starting on the evening of Friday July 24.

I expect backups to take longer than the update, but I’m giving myself the option of a few days just in case.

At the June 18 UVA-WPMU meeting, John Feminella (http://distilledb.com/blog) presented a “primer” on managing a WordPress install. Presentation points included:

• quick intro to Unix commands and Unix file permissions
• structure and layout of a default WordPress install
• customization points for your WordPress install
• start-to-finish walkthrough of WP install
• dealing with common WordPress installation problems
• sensible defaults for your security configuration
• questions

June WPMU Meeting

The next WPMU meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, June 18, in Newcomb Hall 481 at 10:30 AM. As of this writing, we do not yet have a topic for discussion. If there is a topic that you would like addressed — or, even better, a topic that you would like to address yourself — please add to the discussion in the comments section below.

Plugin updates and additions

Defensio Anti-Spam has been updated to version 2.0.3

Onc Click Plugin Updater updated to version 2.4.7 (primarily of interest to Sean and Mark, since only the administrator for the WPMU installation can update installed plugins.)

Wiki Inc has been added – ask Sean about that one.

Wordpress Installation Upgraded to v. 2.7.1

An update to version 2.7.1 was released, and installed automatically. I just wanted everyone to be aware so any active testers can verify sites still work. A quick look around looks like things are ok.

Initial themes installed

I arbitrarily chose to install the top 16 ‘most popular’ themes as listed tonight at

http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/browse/popular/

Only to have some options available, but I haven’t tested them specifically for compatibility with WordPress-mu.

Installed plugins

So far the plugins installed are fairly basic.

Only the global site administrator can install plugins and themes. For now that’s me (mjs@virginia.edu) or Sean McCord (semi@virginia.edu). We can discuss expanding tht at a future meeting.

One click plugin updater v 2.4.5O

Wordpress Mobile Edition v 3.0.4 – with corresponding theme.

WP Security Scan v 2.4 – quick way to check for bad permissions in the installation.

Individual site owners can only choose from themes and plugins already installed by the administrator for the Wordpress-mu installation.

Before the meeting I’ll add a few themes as well.

I may add a few more. Please suggest other plugins and themes you may be interested in trying.

Welcome to indorgs.Virginia.EDU/wpmu.

This site is used by the WordPress developers community at UVA for testing various WordPress tools and features.

Accounts must be created prior to access. Details on how to do that will be posted on the community site for use by members once policies are decided.

This is a TEST environment. Please, do not host production blogs via this site. You’re likely to regret it if you do.
